Tips For Creating Powerful Headlines That Sell

April 24th, 2009

You have mere seconds to capture a prospect’s attention.  One of the single most powerful tools you have to accomplish this task is your headline.  There are several keys to a compelling, and selling, headline and a few tips to help you get the job done.

#1  Tap into Your Prospects’ Emotions

According to psychologists our buying decisions are based first and foremost on our emotions.  Use headlines which offer your readers a strong emotional benefit or reaction.  Some possible emotions are:

For example, The 20-Minute Step that Will Make You a Business Genius taps into readers’ desires to feel smart and powerful.

Other emotions you can tap into are a desire to feel:

1. Attractive
2. Sexy
3. Assertive
4. Confident
5. Energetic
6. Pampered
7. A sense of belonging
8. In control of their own destiny
9. Wealthy
10. Proud
11. Respected
12. Safe

#2 Make it Active

To compel it’s important to use active language - language that shows movement and commands attention.

For example, “Stop Your Sugar Cravings Today With This Simple Step,” is a fine headline however it doesn’t command action nor does it really tap into any emotions.  However, “Conquer Your Sugar Cravings With This Simple Step.”  Conquer is an active and emotionally powerful word.  Readers receive the benefit of feeling powerful and in control and it commands action.

#3 Let Your Reader Know They’re Important

The word YOU is a very powerful word.  It let’s your reader’s feel as if you’re talking to them specifically and interested in solving their problems, issues and helping them achieve their desires.  Instead of using I, Me or We in your headlines, use You.  Using the headline example above compare the two options
“Conquer Your Sugar Cravings With This Simple Step.
“Conquer Sugar Cravings with Our System”

People want to know what’s in it for them and when they can assess that information in the headline, they’re going to be compelled to continue reading your copy and making a purchase.

Here are three more ideas for powerful headlines:

* Make a promise - Earn $1000 a day
* Make it newsworthy - New program guarantees you’ll earn $1000 a day.
* Ask a question – Do you want to ensure your financial future?

Three Simple Steps to Write Headlines That Sell

So now you have some ideas about what types of headlines sell, how do you begin to write those powerful headlines?

Step One – Get to know your audience intimately. What are their hopes, dreams, desires, and problems?  Understanding your audience will help you create an emotional and powerful headline directed specifically at your audience.

Step Two – Determine how your products or services are going to make your prospects’ lives better or solve their problems.  For example if you sell fitness equipment and your audience struggles with feeling attractive then you can create a headline that highlights a specific benefit your fitness equipment offers to solve that problem.

Step Three – Write ten to twenty, yes twenty, possible headlines.  Not only will this give you practice writing compelling headlines, it’ll help you hone in on that perfect headline.  And if you think you have a few winners you can always test them for conversion rates to find out which headline is more effective.

Marketing and copywriting experts consider your headline to be the most import element of any effective marketing piece.  Take the time to craft a compelling, and selling, headline and you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

Feeling overwhelmed ? Advice for copywriters.

September 17th, 2008

At times the life of a freelancer can be overwhelming.

You have one head and many hats, both professional and personal.

You have to get your work done, juggling schedules across different clients, all of whom somehow conspire to set deadlines on the same day.

You have to deal with the administration of your business, submitting invoices, paying bills and keeping up with your tax obligations.

You have no supporting infrastructure to help you with the simple things like making sure you don’t run out of paper, toner, ink cartridges, letterhead and all the other little things that need to be taken care of.

If you work from home, which most freelancers do, you also have to deal with the sometimes difficult challenge of balancing professional and personal needs and priorities.

Like I say, sometimes it can be overwhelming.

Step one. Use a listing or scheduling system

If you want to keep control, be sure that you maintain a list of “things to do”.

You can use a pad of paper, the scheduling functions of Outlook or Yahoo, or a dedicated scheduling, planning and goal-setting software program.

Just be sure to work from a list each day, and find a way to see ahead a little, so you can prioritize what needs to be done today, this week and this month.

Step two. When you feel overwhelmed, take one step at a time

There may be times when you look at your list of things to do and just freeze inside. It’s just too daunting.

“Freezing” like this is not uncommon, but simply makes things worse.

Here’s my tip. Look at what you have to do that day, and tackle one or two small tasks first. Maybe it’s setting an appointment with your accountant, invoicing a client or writing the first five lines of a new assignment.

Each task may take only a few minutes. But once completed, cross it off the list…on paper or on your monitor.

If there is a particular task on the list you have been putting off, time and again, try to get it done first.

Each time you mark even a small task as completed, the list becomes shorter and a little less intimidating. Every check mark or strike-through will lift your spirits a little, and put you in a better frame of mind to tackle the next thing on your list.

Remember…

First, make lists…for today, tomorrow, this week and this month. Know what you have to do and break it all down into single steps.

Second, cross out, strike through or use check marks to give yourself a visual confirmation as each task is completed.

These two tips may not always help when you feel overwhelmed, but they’ll certainly help a lot of the time.

Set yourself tougher personal deadlines.

September 17th, 2008

As freelancers we all work to deadlines. But often we work to deadlines set by our clients.

This is fine, of course. Ultimately we need to meet the times and dates our clients set us.

But if you want to be more productive and efficient in how you work, you should also be setting some deadlines of your own.

Let me give you an example of how a client deadline alone can lead to lower productivity.

Let’s say it’s the beginning of the day and you have until tomorrow lunchtime to complete and deliver a particular job.

If you work based on that deadline alone, you are likely to spend a day and a half on the job. That’s how we are sometimes. We expand our work to fit the available time.

This is where adding your own deadlines comes in.

Instead of using all that time to complete that one task, be tough on yourself and add some other tasks that need to be done within that same period.

Put aside two hours to do some new client acquisition work. Allocate an hour to updating your filing. Create a time slot for catching up on your invoicing or bookkeeping.

In other words, give yourself more work than your clients are giving you.

There are a number of benefits to being tough on yourself in this way.

First, obviously, you’ll get a lot more done between now and tomorrow lunchtime.

Second, you’ll probably do a better job for your client, simply because a tighter deadline forces us to focus with greater concentration and clarity.

Third, you’ll feel better.

You’ll feel better about getting more done.

And you’ll feel a greater sense of accomplishment after meeting not only your client’s deadline, but also those you set for yourself.

The cost of procrastination for freelance writers.

September 17th, 2008

If there is one thing almost all freelance writers have in common, it is that their productivity varies from day to day.

Some days are great, targets are achieved, projects are completed and there were no problems.

Other days, writers find themselves procrastinating. They get distracted and find that by the end of the day they haven’t achieved even half of what they set out to get done.

The big problem is, those bad days cost a lot of money in lost productivity and billings.

Freelance writers only get rich if they can find a way to maintain a peak level of productivity, every single day.

How can you do that? How can you make sure that every day is a productive day? How can you get rid of writer’s block, banish procrastination and avoid all distractions?

You need to get organized and have a system in place.

You need a process that gives structure and discipline to each day.

Frankly, most freelance writers don’t have enough self-discipline. As a result they lose hundreds of hours a year, and thousands of dollars.

Is there a way to structure one’s work that results in continuous, peak productivity?

Yes, there is. It’s called Writing Rituals.

Five separate a sequential rituals are put in place, helping writers structure their work and achieve much higher levels of productivity, on a continuous basis.
